SAVI Systems presents the Dali Opticon 2 Bookshelf Hi-Fi / Home Theatre Speakers
Dali speakers have been around since the 1980's - and have always been respected for delivering good, realistic Hi-Fi sound that is easy to live with for the long term. DALI stands for Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries, a Danish manufacturer of high-end speakers. The Opticon series of speakers slot in as a new range between the easy going, cheaper and popular Zensor range and the higher end, well reviewed Epicon Hi-Fi speaker range. Consequently, the Opticon series have a fair bit of trickle down technology from their more expensive Epicon relatives. The aim (and success) of Dali speakers is to always deliver a sound and speaker design that slots into a standard home and are relatively unfussy about things such as which amplifier is used or where to put the speakers.
The DALI OPTICON 2 is a largish sized bookshelf style Hi-Fi speaker, designed to be placed close to the wall or mounted on it. Of course, to ensure that the bass response is reasonable from such a compact cabinet it has a rear-mounted bass port to help out the special Dali 61/2 inch low-loss Wood Fibre Woofer. Coupled to the bass driver is the new 28 mm ultra-light Soft Dome Tweeter and gold-plated terminals. The Dali Opticon 2 delivers a punchy, wide soundstage that images very realistically as well as having a long term listening tone that is designed to live with for many years and deliver an unfatiguing sound. Due to the larger bass driver and the larger cabinet, the Opticon 2 plays with a bit more oomph and authority than the smaller Opticon 1. Indeed it's deeper bass makes it appropriate even in a medium sized room.
The Opticon 2 is hand assembled in DALI's factory in Denmark and, unlike many other loudspeaker manufacturers, all of the components in the Opticon 2 are also manufactured in-house. Each driver has unique elements only available in DALI loudspeakers. The midrange/bass driver uses DALI's SMC Magnet (Soft Magnetic Compound) instead of more traditional hard magnets. SMC has the unique ability to deliver high magnetic conductivity coupled with very low electrical conductivity which offers a significant lowering of the coloration of the reproduced sound, especially over hours of use as the magnet system heats up. The tweeter in the OPTICON 2 is a special in-house Dali development and is of the oft preferred soft-dome type. The large 28mm thin soft-dome is engineered to ensure low resonance frequency, high power handling, and exceptional headroom for high sound pressure levels and extreme excursions. Incorporating an ultra-thin magnetic fluid for cooling, the fluid has a very high flux saturation point for greater power handling. This also means superb control of coil movement - even at very high sound pressure levels. The dome material itself is very lightweight, and actually so thin that a coating has to be applied to hold the material together and uniform. All of these design choices have been made with the realisation that many people now listen to a wider range of music and movies and TV shows than ever before, and so a speaker that is good for Hi-Fi should also be good for Home Theatre use too. In a nutshell, the Dali Opticon 2 is engineered to sound great, perform above expectations, and to continue to do so reliably and fuss free for many years.
